About the Conference
The 7th Annual Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands Conference (2017) is organised by the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment (TFI). The TFI is a multidisciplinary organisation which is well placed as the University of Newcastle’s Environmental outreach arm, to engage with Australia’s leading professionals involved in the broader environmental fields.
This annual conference is a significant event on the Hunter Region calendar. It provides an important avenue for TFI to promote the use of best-practice approaches in the management of rehabilitation of mined lands. Based on previous years’ attendance figures (1/3 academic, 1/3 industry and 1/3 government), we are anticipating approximately 300+ delegates, making it one of the largest mining rehabilitation conferences in Australia. This is your opportunity to engage and be engaged. Dates: 29, 30 & 31 March 2017 Venue: Muswellbrook RSL 113 Bridge Street, Muswellbrook Phone: 02 65431700 Due to the large number of excellent abstracts received, the conference has been expanded to include an additional day this year. This year our event will be held over 3 days. Across these three days, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in various activities, including workshops, mine tours as well as the main conference. An overview of the conference schedule is listed below: Wed 29th March: Mine tours and a workshop in the afternoon and a civic reception in the evening. The tours would have a cost of $50 per person and the reception will be free. Thu 30th: Full day of presentations with posters and panel session, followed by a dinner. The dinner will be $40 per person extra. Fri 31st: Presentations till 11 am then there will be concurrent workshops that will run until 2:30 pm. The workshops include: New practices to advance mine rehab in the Hunter Valley, and Pathways to relinquishment and opportunities to transition to productive alternate land uses. In terms of cost: the conference registration covers both Thurs 30th and up to 11am on the 31st (excluding the dinner). The workshops will be $80 per person extra. Mine ToursOn Wed 29th March we are conducting tours of current mine rehabilitation practices at a number of mine sites within the Hunter Valley. This will allow conference delegates to observe in-situ best practices in progressive rehabilitation of open-cut coal mining operations.
